Why an Application Process? As interest in participating in Move the Butte continues to grow and evolve, we have instituted an application process for dance piece submissions. While we would be delighted to accommodate every application, we are limited to accepting a maximum of 22 pieces for the production. This application process enables us to:
Uphold Our Mission: By assessing each submission, we ensure that every piece aligns with the overarching mission of the production.
Foster Opportunities: A simultaneous review of all applications allows for equitable consideration, with a special emphasis on larger works that offer opportunities to dancers of all levels.
Curate a Balanced Program: This process helps us create a well-rounded, inclusive, and engaging experience for all participants.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this process as we strive to deliver a positive experience for all of our participants, including YOU, and co-create a wonderful 2026 production.
Applicants will receive an email notification on October 3, 2025 regarding the status of their application, indicating whether it has been 'accepted' or placed on the 'waitlist.' Please note that pieces on the 'waitlist' may still be considered for inclusion in the show if additional slots become available at a later date.
Once confirmed as choreographers, you will attend a MANDATORY MEETING on EITHER
Tuesday October 7, 2025 @ 10:30am - 12:30pm at the Pump Room
OR
Thursday October 9, 2025 @ 7:30pm - 9:30pm at the Center for the Arts.
*Please submit a separate application form for each dance piece you wish to choreograph.*
When submitting your application, please keep in mind that we will evaluate the following criteria:
Commitment, Availability, and Communication: Is the choreographer available to attend all rehearsals, mandatory showings/meetings, and performances? Can the choreographer provide essential information to the directors in a timely manner?
Execution and Management: Can the choreographer effectively carry out the choreography and manage the group needs required for the piece?
Audience Resonance: Will the piece resonate with and be appropriate for our diverse audiences?
Class and Rehearsal Scheduling
After a successful launch of Move the Butte Rehearsal Classes last year, all choreographers will have the opportunity to apply to offer their MTB piece as a technique and choreography class through School of Dance. As you consider the overall vision of your piece, we ask that you begin considering the following:
Am I confident in my ability to offer
1.) a comprehensive and appropriate warm up
2.) technique and skills drills and exercises applicable to my choreography
3.) clear instruction and demonstration of my choreography and
4.) a comprehensive and appropriate cool down?
OR
Is my piece better offered as a rehearsal only focusing on developing the choreography? *please note all choreographers should provide a warm up and cool down specific to their piece at ever rehearsal
Once confirmed as a choreographer, you will be asked to apply to offer a class and make schedule requests. School of Dance staff will make the final determination if your piece is appropriate to be offered as a class.
