Move the Butte is a beloved community dance production that celebrates creativity, expression, and connection through dance. Each year, more than 130 adults come together to create this vibrant show, representing a wide range of experience levels and dance styles. We welcome new and returning dancers—whether you’re a lifelong mover or stepping onto the stage for the first time. Move the Butte is an inclusive space where everyone is appreciated and encouraged.
*Participation Eligibility*
To participate in Move the Butte, individuals must:
Be 18 years of age or older, and
Have completed high school (or an equivalent) by the participant registration start on October 24, 2025
Be able to attend all mandatory show dates
We are excited to begin casting Move The Butte (MTB) 2026 with our official 'Call for Dancers' that is now OPEN.
MTB offers opportunities for all skill levels. You can join pieces in one of two ways:
1. MTB Rehearsal Classes
These pieces are led by Crested Butte School of Dance (SOD) instructors.
Classes are open for registration on a first-come, first-served basis.
2. Open Community Pieces
These pieces are led by community volunteer choreographers.
You must apply to join. Please ensure you apply for pieces that match your skill level, as choreographers will select dancers at their discretion.
Here is a timeline of what you can expect as you apply and register.
October 24: Call for Dancers is OPEN
The official Call for Dancers Form will be active on this website. We encourage interested participants to sign up/apply as soon as possible since many pieces tend to fill quickly.
Registration opens for MTB Rehearsal Classes.
October 31: Choreographer Review Begins
Choreographers for Open Community Pieces receive their list of interested applicants. Choreographers may choose to remove their piece from the Call for Dancers if/when it fills.
Early/Mid-November: Casting Decisions
MTB School of Dance Rehearsal Classes start on November 16, with rolling start dates to follow for all pieces.
Choreographers for Open Community Pieces will email applicants to notify them of their acceptance or waitlist status no later than November 11.
If you are waitlisted, MTB Directors will email you by November 20 (or as soon as possible) with a list of all pieces that remain open and available to accept dancers.
With inclusivity as our top priority, it is our goal to ensure that anyone and everyone who wants to participate in Move the Butte is able to secure their place in the show.
December 1 – December 20: Mandatory Participation Form & Studio Pro Account Log In
Final Step: Complete the 2-Step MTB 2026 Registration by December 20.
Fill out our Participation Form, which will be linked on this page of the website starting December 1.
Every dancer must also create an account or log in to the Studio Pro Registration Portal. This is where you'll pay your participation fee(s)*.
*PARTICIPATION FEE(S):
Dancers are required to pay a non-refundable participation fee of $20 for each dance piece that they are in. This fee helps cover show week and production expenses. These fees will be billed to each individual’s Studio Pro account directly after the first showing and must be paid by the second showing. If you have a financial hardship and cannot afford these fees, please be in touch with MTB Directors to discuss volunteer work-trade options.
MTB 2026 Choreographers do NOT pay participation fees.
Please ensure you can attend by reviewing all dates below.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
We encourage all participants to limit their involvement to no more than four pieces. Please be aware that dancers performing in multiple pieces may need to make quick costume changes between back-to-back pieces. This may require them to miss the beginning or end of a piece to accommodate those changes. Quick changes will not be determined until AFTER the second showing happens in February.
*Why The Participation Policy Exists*
Move the Butte is designed as an adult performance environment that provides space for creative exploration, expression, and community among adults. Because we regularly receive far more interest than available performance slots, clear eligibility guidelines help us maintain fairness and consistency for all adult participants.
This policy also ensures an environment that feels comfortable and appropriate for adult artists, while maintaining equity among younger community members who are still completing high school.
We deeply value the enthusiasm and talent of younger dancers in our community, and encourage high school students to stay engaged through the School of Dance programs and other youth performance opportunities until they become eligible for Move the Butte participation.
